The Perils of Petey Podengo

22 Housesitters pt. 2

Posted on March 15, 2020April 6, 2020
I’m trying to teach Sparky how to sit before Grandma says we can GO!

In Episode 21, I shared about how I’m in charge of the Security Department of our housesitting team. I’m also the Entertainment Committee chairperson for the animals Grandma and I take care of.

Before I came along, Grandma would housesit and the dog would mope around, telling her, “You’re not my mother!” It would hurt Grandma’s feelings that, as hard as she tried, she could not make the pet happy.

Sparky was definitely a mama’s boy. But I kept him so busy with new farm adventures, he forgot to be sad.

“Come on, Sparky, let’s go outside!” I barked.

“Sure!” Sparky play-growled.

Every morning we dashed out the door and headed for the pasture where three bulls hung out.

Grandma called them “the three wise men.” Mostly, they just enjoyed lying on the warm grass and swapping tales.

Sparky and I would run up on them and bark, bark, bark- giving them what for- then run back to the house giving each other shoulder bumps and high fives.

“Guess we told THEM, huh Petey!” Sparky laughed.

Grandma would stay on the porch, shaking her head. She heard one bull ask another, “Did you hear something?”

“Naw,” another bull answered. “Just the farm boys showing off.”

Knowing we really didn’t get close to the bulls, Grandma would scold, “You boys better watch yourselves. One step by a big hoof and that will be it!”

Looking for more fun on the farm

The boy dogs can be sure to have adventures when I show up for housesitting. The girl dogs? Well, they are so enamored with my good looks and charm, I don’t have to work so hard.

Abby could have been my twin sister, but she’s about 50 pounds heavier than I am. She showed me around the place and we had fun chasing the ball Grandma threw. The other animals had big ears like me. I thought they were overgrown Podengos, but Abby explained otherwise.

“They are mules, Petey. Not Podengos. Mules!

I thought I had met some kinfolk. Oh, well.

Abby liked adventure, too. So Grandma drove us to Bear Creek. Since I was working, I was the lifeguard and watched over Abby in the water. That girl sure had fun! She did not want to come home!

Abby, the Water Girl

Then there was Addie. She was an old grandma kind of dog, so then I had two grandma’s I had to walk every day! She was deaf, so being the gentleman that I am, I walked her down the land and back, twice a day.

Grandma is proud of the way I respect my elders!

High security, lively entertainment and lots of love. That’s how we roll with our Housesitting Team Use the Contact Form if you’d like our services!
